Backups
What It Does
CrabShack automatically backs up your instance's data in the background, so a hardware failure or a bad change doesn't wipe out your agents' work.
Why It Matters
Your agents accumulate real value over time — conversation history, learned memory, uploaded knowledge, and any automations you've built. Backups are stored off your instance, in a separate remote backup location set up for you — not just another folder on the same disk — so a hardware failure, a bad change, or even a factory reset doesn't take your backups down with it.
What Gets Backed Up
Backup covers four categories, each independently switchable on or off:
- Cron Jobs & Canvas — schedules and canvas data
- Chat History — your conversation history
- Agent Memory — workspace files, memory, and agent configuration
- Knowledge Base — the knowledge base index, memory metadata, and settings snapshots
Lists data is included as part of your workspace under Agent Memory — there isn't a separate toggle for it.
How Often It Runs
Once set up, CrabShack backs up automatically in the background every few minutes — you don't need to trigger it yourself. A Backup now button is also available on the Backup page if you want to force one immediately, for example right before a risky change.
Before trying a new automation template on their main agent, a business owner clicks Backup now on the Backup page — a habit that costs them ten seconds and means they can undo any surprise the template causes.
If This Goes Wrong
- The Backup page shows no backup has ever run — a backup destination needs to be provisioned first, normally set up during activation; if it's missing, reactivating your instance re-provisions it.
- A backup shows an error — check which category is failing; toggling that category off and back on will retry it on the next cycle.
Restoring configuration always excludes the raw settings file itself — this is intentional, so a restore can't silently reintroduce old credentials or connection settings.
